The Emporia Area Business Conference is a one-day event, organized by the Human Resource Professional Association of Greater Emporia (HR-PAGE), and designed to keep business owners, managers, and human resources professionals up-to-date on the ever changing world of work. The conference is July 10th from 8am-4pm, and for a $20 registration fee, all conference attendees will receive breakfast, lunch, and access to the following presentations:
Technology at Work – Ashlyn Lindskog of Martin Pringle
Ashlyn advises employers on a wide variety of employment laws. She will tackle technology in the workplace including BYOD (bring your own device), telecommuting and more. Security, overtime rules, FLSA and other legal issues are landing employers in hot water. If you have employees who use their own phone for work, or are working from home or find yourself with a data breech, you need to hear what she has to say!
Closing the Skills Gap – Scott Ferrin of the Society for Human Resource Management
83% of companies report a moderate to severe shortage of skilled workers. With unemployment rates under 4%, how do you staff your business? Scott will explore six proven methods to increase and maintain your workforce and close the skills gap allowing for your success now and in the future.
Scott’s presentation will be supported by a panel of Emporia’s Skills Gap Specialists. Learn how to maximize local resources for building your current and future manpower with the skills and experience you need. See success stories from local businesses. Explore funding and other assistance available through government and grant opportunities. Learn how to participate in Emporia’s workforce development initiatives!
From Workplace Violence to A New Normal – Lamar Roth of Excel Industries
Lamar was Director of HR at Excel Industries when 4 employees were killed in a shooting at the plant. He continues in that role today. Lamar will review the experiences right after the event up to the present and will explore recommendations and lessons learned.
Marijuana in the Workplace – Melody Rayl of Fisher and Phillips
Prior to engaging in the practice of law, Melody served 6 years on active duty in the U.S. Army and 20 years as a law enforcement officer. Melody counsels and advocates for private and public-sector employers in all aspects of employment litigation and traditional labor law. One of the newest areas of law affecting employers is the rise of medical/ recreational marijuana and the use of CBD oil. Learn about the impact on your business - recruitment, DOT, disciplinary action, and more. Melody’s practical knowledge and common sense advice is a god-send.
