We are kicking off 2024 with our guest speaker from the Emporia Police Department, Ray Mattas. The presentation will focus on how to handle an active shooter in the workplace.

Ray Mattas has served with the Emporia Police Department since 1993 and is the Captain of Support Services. He started in law enforcement in 1989 with the Ottawa Department of Public Safety. In March of 2023, Ray graduated from the Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command. Over his 34 years, he has had many accomplishments including being an active shooter/reality-based  training instructor, a defensive tactics instructor, a taser instructor, a noise/light distraction device instructor, a member of the SRT team, an FBI-trained sniper, and an explosive breacher.

    Learning Objectives:

    1. Understanding our physiological response to stress and how to overcome it.
    2. The difference between run, hide, and fight vs. avoid, deny, and defend.
    3. What to do when the police arrive.
